What to bring to your appointment

Bring the documents below so we can prepare your return accurately and maximize your deductions.

Your personal information
  • Social security number and date of birth — Yours and your spouse's full name, SSN, and date of birth (mm-dd-yy).
Other people who may belong on your return
  • Dependents — Dates of birth and social security numbers for children and dependents.
  • Childcare & custody — Childcare records (provider ID and address), Form 8332, divorce decree, or documents showing ex-spouse releases claim rights.
Education payments
  • Tuition bills & forms — Bills from educational institutions, Forms 1098-T and 1098-E, scholarships and fellowships.
Employee information
  • W-2 and 1099 forms — All Forms W-2 and 1099 received for the tax year.
Self-employment information
  • Income records — Forms 1099-MISC, Schedules K-1, and income records not reported on 1099s.
  • Business expenses — Dollar amount totals and records for all business expense categories.
  • Assets & home office — Business-use asset information for depreciation; office-in-home details if applicable.
  • Vehicle & mileage — Total miles driven, business miles, parking/tolls, and actual expense receipts if applicable.
Rental income
  • Rental records — Income and expense records by category; rental asset information for depreciation.
Retirement income
  • Pension & Social Security — Pension/IRA/annuity income (1099-R); Social Security/RRB income (1099-SSA, RRB-1099).
Savings and investments
  • Interest & dividends — Forms 1099-INT, 1099-OID, 1099-DIV.
  • Stock & property sales — Forms 1099-B, 1099-S; acquisition dates and cost basis records.
Other income
  • Additional sources — Unemployment (1099-G), gambling (W-2G), alimony, healthcare reimbursements (1099-SA), jury duty, hobby income, prizes, and other 1099s.
Itemizing deductions
  • Mortgage & taxes — Forms 1098, state/local income or sales tax paid, property tax records.
  • Charitable donations — Cash donation receipts (over $25), non-cash donation records.
  • Medical & other — Healthcare insurance and provider payments; mileage for charitable/medical purposes; job-related expenses.
IRA information
  • Contributions & basis — Amount contributed for the current tax year; traditional IRA basis; year-end IRA values.
Federally declared disaster
  • Disaster records — Affected city/county; property loss records; repair costs; insurance and FEMA assistance information.
